window update has killed my laptop!

Hi,

Can anyone help me?

I got a pop up yesterday to say there were updates for windows, so shut my laptop down for it to update. This was last night, and ever since then I just have a blue screen that says installing 6 of 6... and nothing happens.

Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks in advance

oh dam, why did you shut it down? you should have run the update through the update program which windows includes in the start menu's.

    What laptop is it?

as i think you will need to do a system restore, have you got any photos or documents on it that you need? because i would first try and back up those documents before a system restore.
    ewwwww what is that...
  • Thanks for your quick reply... its a compaq presario cq56.

I'm pretty rubbish at all this techie stuff tbh, it just tells me that there is an update that will install when I next shut down, which is what normally happens.

There isn't anything on there that I would be that bothered about losing, I have everything I need backed up on my main PC.

How would I do a system restore? I'm stuck on the blue screen at the moment :(

ok so turn off your computer.

when you turn it on, keep tapping the F11 key a recovery option should display, and follow the instructions on screen...

Or does your computer go straight into a blue screen?

  • F11 has worked, its recovering now... Thankyou so much for your help- I'd have been lost without it!

Lesson dully learnt about updating through the menu instead of shutting it down.

    Thanks again :j
  • You need to go into safe mode, and either restor your machine to a time before the update happened

or you can to go into safe mode and uninstall the update.
    1. Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_47.png, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, clicking View installed updates.
    2. Click the update that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_41.png If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
I had the same issue when I first got this laptop, one of the windows updates crashed the system (I'm on windows 7) and after reading a few forums it seems alot of others had exactly same problem with that particular update. Once it's removed everything should work fine.

Actually did you see a safe mode option? it would have been a black screen with white writing and a 30 second count down timer?

too late now i guess hehe, anyway at least now you get a fresh install.
