Truck Damage Posing a risk - Nothing can be done?

  • Can't see what can be done to be honest, can't make the yard any bigger.

People must be getting by safely , maybe taking their time that won't do them any harm in a built up area.

How often does this happen is it twice a day or once a week.

In reality it is the responsibility of the baker to produce the risk assesement and then ensure that the company who he buys flour from complies with it in the vehicles they or their haulage contractor uses.
Damage to property following the incident is reportable to the police who could prosecute the driver. (I was involved with a similar incident some years ago)

Despite attempts to get somebody from the truck company to speak with me about this i've heard nothing. So I contacted VOSA, who said they couldn't help and to speak with my council. Just had a reply from them saying there is nothing they can do.

VOSA only generally deal with the legality/condition of the truck/trailer/load.

Most trucks and certainly HGV's require an operators licence which are issued by local Traffic Commissioners offices. Licences can have terms and conditions attached or even revoked. Contact them here:

Would a shorter vehicle not eradicate the issue of the cab being in the road?

Not sure how often it happens. I see them when I leave on a morning for work, but obviously not around during the day so couldn't specify as to when or how often the deliveries are.

It's a tight spot anyway. To come up the knowl and turn right onto back knowle road you have to come to a stop because of the angle.

With the cab being in the road, people driving up the knowle are forced to wenture on the other side of the road to pass, it blocks to view if your wanting to turn up back knowle road, and if your a car parked where the silver one is in the photo and for about 3/4 cars further down hill, pulling out is difficult because you cannot see vehicles coming from behind.

Just a case of making a tricky corner worse. Although I would drive carefully, not everyone will
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

    Thats better :D

My general point is the company should be doing this work and looking at their options, to see if there is a risk (or i'm just being a pain) and if they do identify a risk, is there something that can be done to minimize it?

Lorry driver here. I've just looked at that on google streetview.. I can't work out for the life of me quite why they're hitting anything or what the problem is. It is a very very simple reverse. The gap they've got to reverse into is about 15ft wide which is 7ft wider than the truck and 5ft wider than I've had in a lot of places. All a lorry driver would need to do is drive forward into Back Knowl Road and then just reverse straight backwards into the place. Even if they didn't do that, it is still a simple 90 degree reverse with ample room. If a driver is hitting something its because of their own incompetence rather than any actual problem at the place.

Its made remotely difficult if people park their cars in the "driveway" of the place but thats simple to remedy and is the fault of the bakery and not the delivery company.

The yard is plenty long enough to get an artic in with only maybe a couple of feet of the cab protruding into the road which is wide enough that you'd still be able to pass it without crossing the center line.

I can't see what the problems the car drivers are having either. Your post on that flies in the face of what I'm seeing on streetview. If they've having the issues you're claiming, maybe they can't drive for toffee either.

As not my real name says Streetview makes it look much less of an issue. The road is wide enough for four cars to pass side my side at the junction, and the artic isn't even blocking all of lane 2. I think the "head on collision waiting to happen" is a bit of an exaggeration

If their drivers can't reverse into what, in HGV terms, is an open goal, they must have a bloody expensive insurance bill! I've only ever hit one car in the hundreds of thousands of miles I've driven, and that was someone who decided to park on the outside of a tight curve whilst I was reversing.

They may have shorter / smaller vehicles. BUT... that vehicle may not be suitable for the rest of the delivery run.

Pyhsically too small for the days load etc.

Used to get customers complaining all the time. When you had to park around the corner because you couldnt get closer or couldnt get down the alley.

Blame the reps who used to promise the earth, Of course we can deliver your stuff in a small van on Monday's. Then the paperwork gets to the transport office and they laugh when its a 2 day run and that town is the 2nd day.
With no hope of getting it onto a small van even if they could perform miracles.
