Thanks everyone! I' m writing all this down right now.

Just gearing myself up to get to supermarket - my first trip since the new baby arrived. Gulp. I've been wandering about the house feeding her without a care most of the days, my main worry is forgetting to put myself away before we go out, iyswim..

Wish me luck! I'll let you know how my first loaf goes, I'm really excited about it! Life in the fast lane, eh (certainly DOES make you lose your mind, lol!) . I have a feeling I might be on here again before I actually manage to make a loaf, I'm really nervous that I'll get it wrong!

    Thanks again for your help!

Perhaps this sounds silly but don't be tempted to use ordinary flour as it doesn't work properly. I would get strong bread flour from anywhere - whatever's easiest for you to transport, but avoid supermarket's own-brand yeasts which I find don't work - I use Allinson's or Hovis. You will love your machine, and also the wonderful feeling of knowing exactly what you're eating. Good luck !

I have been using plain value flour and tesco's yeast in my breadmaker and I haven't had a bad loaf yet! I normally use strong flour but I've been trying to use up everything up in my cupboard.

actually I use the tesco bread mixes as they are cheap starting at 58p and you can get quite a variety, my son loves the cheese and onion one, and the wholemeal breadmix isnt bad either, tesco.com online shopping, great stuff.

Does that not defeat the point of HM bread being healthier since you know exactly what is in it?

never had any problems with tesco dried yeast......ditto point about making sure yeast can be used with bread maker
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

Make sure you get a good quality yeast. I buy Allinson. Too many times i have ended up with a brick when i have used super markets own.
Good luck with the bread making.
    Hope your feeling better soon.

You've probably just explained why I had my first 'bad' loaf yesterday....made with ASDA own brand yeast and is hard as a rock....I used Hovis before with no problems so think I'll revert back to Hovis even though it's more expensive. Thanks for the explanation would have wasted more flour etc if I hadn't read this!

Sainsbury's strong white bread flour is the best!!!!! And it is now 49p. only! Its very high in protein and gives you the same quality as Allinsons very strong flour and Canadian flour from Waitrose. Other shop's own brand flours are lower in protein. I've tried Co-op, Lidl, Tesco, Somerfield, Asda so I know the difference :)

good lcuk with your first shopping trip since baby arrived :)

I use lidl or tesco powered milk.
I get carr's flours as it has higher selenium levels. 99p for white or wholemeal.

the doves farm yeast lasts ages, as long as you keep it in airtight tub.

This is what I often use. Not had a bad loaf yet either.

Tesco strong white flour is also 49p. Use when we are flush.:rotfl:

Got me stuff and survived! Just. Stopping for petrol was a good and bad idea. Good because it meant I didn't break down (on the bloomin red, so long since I went out I'd forgotten). Bad because they both started screaming purple stylie once I got out of the car at the station. Doh.

Anyway! Got Hovis stuff as Morrisons still have the bogof on the yeast AND flour, so got enough yeast to last me forever (stuff in sachets, still 79p for 2 boxes each box is enough for 10 loaves) and four bags of flour (3 wholemeal and one white, 92p for white and £1.09 for wholemeal, for two bags), thanks for the tip!:T

Read somewhere on another thread that flour is ok to keep in the freezer, hope I got that right? I remember it saying that it kills bugs, I just can't remember if it said it's ok to keep there indefinitely? Haven't put it in yet just in case I'm wrong.. I got Morrisons own milk as I figured it might be the same as Marvel but it was 50p cheaper.

I also remember reading that the Panasonic SD253 needs less/more water than it says in the book but I can't remember which or how much! I'll do a search but if anyone knows of fthe top of their head it'll probably save me an hour as I never seem to do very well with my searches!!

Thanks again! Dh wants to wait and make a loaf overnight for our bacon sarnies tomorrow morning, but I want to do it now to see what happens, lol! If it all went horribly wrong overnight it'd be a shame, so I guess we need to do a test run first, heh heh. Talked myself into that then, little un's behaviour permitting.

Best go get the machine out the box, I only read the instruction manual over and over (in bed, too!!!) and didn't even look at the machine yet....:j
