  • The Linksys WRT54GL could just be plugged into an Ethernet connection on your current router.

If you wish you could turn the WiFi off on the ISP supplied device and everything will "just work".

I suggest you try the set up before flashing with the alternative firmware so that if there are difficulties you know it worked once.

Providing that the DHCP server is disabled in the WRT54GL.

DD-WRT is already installed on the Linksys.

I used to have my connection settings in the adsl modem and have the wireless act as an access point but this leaves 2 firewalls.
I've set my adsl as a 'dumb' modem now, it's called bridge mode, and typed the connection settings in my dd-wrt as pppoe (the adsl modem then converts this to pppoa for talk talk)
Looking into fiber-optic broadband, this is set up the same way, with an open reach vdsl modem and then a router which you type pppoe username & password into.
I can't believe so many people have called you a dumb user above!

When I tried something similar this wasn't required. The "WAN" port on (in this case) the WRT54GL gets the IP address issued by the first router and "NATs" this to the (different) range it issues.
