I have just bought a new van and was online checking for insurance quotes with a view of cancelling the policy on my old van and using my ncd on my new policy. I got quoted £680 without ncd and £340 with it so i called the insurance company and asked how much it would cost if i brought over my ncd in 1 month and was told that my 9yrs ncd could be mirrored by the new insurer and it would only cost £305, this now means i have full no claims on both vehicles whilst i try to sell my old one.

Just thought i would share my experience so others who are buying a new car can keep the old one insured instead of sorning it. Just ask if you can get your ncd mirrored, nothing to lose and lots to gain.:j:j

No it doesn't. You have full no claims on one vehicle. You have a discount equal to the no claims on the second but you do not have any no claims on the second.

But other than that, there have been companies around for at least a decade I am aware of that will give a discount equivalent to the NCD on the first car once you've got so many years.

You are correct saying that i cant use my NCD on more than 1 policy, the paper work arrived today and they have given me a discount on my new policy as if i had full no claims but the paperwork does indeed state 0 yrs NCD

Its not being mirrored though, They are just delaying the time before they ask you for the full premium if you had zero no claims.

Ive done it many times in the past, Local brokers were best, Go in say im swapping cars but i have not sold the old one yet. Brokers have held the paperwork back for me rather than add silly charges.

When i discussed it with the broker over the phone he said i could keep my other vehicle insured indefinately, he didnt even ask for proof of my other no claims just asked for my existing policy number. I have been told and have it in writing that my premium is £305 and if/when i cancel my other policy and bring my no claims over i will be due a discount of sorts.

You have nil NCD on your new policy, so no need to "prove" it.

What your broker has done is arrange an "introductory discount" off your new policy to reflect your claim free driving history.

(ie you are being "rewarded" for not being a new client who has no experience - you aren't being rated as a brand new motorist!)
