Claiming back Income Tax - P60's - when and where?

Hi, and first a preemptive thanks for any help you are able to provide.

I lost my previous job last April - around the 4th, I think, and after a couple of months found myself homeless, until one of my brothers offered me a place to live in September.
I found a new job in November, and am now living in Oxfordshire instead of East Sussex.
I was paid a couple of times last year from my last place, once in April and once in May, to cover arrears and holiday owed to me. I then claimed JSA for 5 months.
My new job doesn't pay much (but more than the last one, for less hours!) and I'm fairly sure I earnt way less than the £7400ish allowance, and should therefore be able to claim back - I believe - all of the income tax I paid last year.
My question is, basically, when would my last employer have issued a P60 for me? Would they have done it after processing all of my final payments, or at the end of the 2011/12 tax year (ie, this or last month)? I assume they would have sent it to the address they had on file, so would I be able to get a copy of it sent to my new address? If so, how?
Finally, do I even need copies of my P60(s), or can I simply call HMRC, tell them I believe I'm owed a refund, and have them check?

Again, thank you for any help

P60`s are only issued ONCE at the end of the tax year.

If your not sure what your total pay was for last year you can ask for a letter from HMRC showing your pay & tax details and put a claim in.

also you need to include your JSA in your calculation of income as it is taxable

I think the OP is actually asking about reclaiming tax from 2010-11 when he was employed, the JSA was paid in 2011-12 and presumably was accounted for when the P45 from the jobcentre was handed to the new employer.

A P60 is only issued if you were employed by the company on April 5th - ie end of tax year. It sounds like you finished just before the end of tax year 2010/11.

What they would have given you is a P45.

You should have got a P45 when all the final payments had been handled. From what you are saying your final payments crossed into the 2011/12 tax year. Did you get a P45 and what did you do with it? You are not entitled to a P60 from them as you were not still working with them at the end of 2011/12 tax year.
Finally, do I even need copies of my P60(s), or can I simply call HMRC, tell them I believe I'm owed a refund, and have them check?

As it's for the tax year just ended HMRC will not have the info as yet. However you need to remember to add up your payments from the previous company, your JSA and your salary from your new job. Then you can see whether you are owed any tax rebate.

Well, I was only employed by them within the 10/11 year, but as the person below says, the payments fell into the 11/12 year.

I did get a P45 from my previous employer, and gave that first to the Jobcentre, and then to my new employer, as well as the P45 from the DWP.
I'm 90% certain that even after including the few payments I received from JSA, I earnt less than the allowance. However, I can't be 100% certain as I don't have all of the payslips from my last employer, so I can't see how much I earnt pre-tax, only what actually went into my account. Same with the JSA payments.
Is there any way to estimate what I earnt before tax if I just add up how much went into my account?

Did that P45 include the payments made in 2011/12?

You should only have given your new employer the P45 from the job centre as they should have used the info from the P45 from your previous employer and included that in their totals. If the P45 from your previous employer was for tax year 2010/11 you can ignore that one.

What are the totals on the P45 from the job centre? Add that to the amount paid from your current employer to get your total.

What we need to know is if the payments made from your old employer in tax year 2011/12 have been accounted for in the P45 you got from them.

    Not easily.

If the payments for 2011/12 were not in the P45 get in touch with your previous employers and ask for a Statement of Earnings for 2011/12.

If the payments for 2011/12 were not in the P45 get in touch with your previous employers and ask for a Statement of Earnings for 2011/12.

I had a look, and the P45 from the Jobcentre says "Total taxable benefit in this period: £1600.73"
I found the payslip from my last employer for the pay I received on 28/4/11, it is for 1074.89 before tax, and states my cumulative earnings as "Niable Gross 1074.89".
I have lost the payslip for May, but after tax all I got on that one was £18.24, so I don't think it will affect the total significantly.
My latest payslip from my current employer says "YTD Gross Pay £3912.83, Taxable Pay 3873.23" (I had £39.60 of expenses)
So that's a total of £6548.85, not including whatever the pre-tax of £18.24 is.
That is so far, not including what I will get paid on 27th of this month, which is likely to be around £980 before tax.

Not enough to take you over £7475.

The 27th of this month is in the new tax year 12/13 so doesn't count.

I suggest you get a hold of the Statement of Earnings from your old employer. Then wait for your P60 from your current employer. Then apply for your refund.

Do I not need anything from the Jobcentre? Or will that be in the P60?
Also, is it just the Income tax I can claim, or do I get any of the NI contributions?

I doubt it. You can send the P45 from the Job Centre and let HMRC sort it all out.

Only income tax. NI is not reclaimable.
