For an introduction and easy read, something by Alvin Hall or the Naked Trader book.

As you build knowledge go to some of the classic investment texts such as The Intelligent Investor by Peter Lynch or The Essays of Warren Buffett.

You could also get a magazine subscription like Money Observer or Investors Chronicle

Go to a library and save yourself the cost of the book.

If you look at http://monevator.com/2012/01/17/how-to-invest-on-a-budget/ for a quick guide to low cost investing.
