Tax Credits Above 26k

Hi all,

Had a letter saying everything was to stop in march (quite rightly in my opinion) and they've made a payment at beginning of April! Has this happened to anyone else? And do you know if you can just "pay it back" or whether they will adjust your tax code?

Many Thanks

Is it a final payment? Maybe CTC is paid in arrears?
  • The only way you will know for sure is to either call the helpline and query it.

Does your letter saying when they'll stop say when the last payment will be made?

As Murgatroyd21 said you won't get a definitive answer to your question unless you contact the HMRC tax credits department. But according to the HMRC website Tax Credits are generally paid in arrears so it's likely that the payment is correct and it is your last payment.

Also tax credits and the tax you pay are totally unrelated.

Not necessarily. HMRC are using tax code adjustment as a way to collect tax credits overpayments under direct recovery. They will do this automatically if you fit the criteria unless you contact them with another means to pay. They can collect up to £3000 a year via your tax code.

what date at the beginning of april was this? Bearing in mind the start of the award period for tax credits is 6th of April, if your payment was before the 6th of April then it was for the previous year (11/12) and your award will cease from the start of the new year (12/13)
