P45 Question

Hi All..
Please can someone who knows about P45's help me with regards to my husbands P45 confusion?..
He started a new job on the 19th March 2012 and he's only just got back his P45 from the job centre. He knows he's got to retain part 1A for himself and give in parts 2 and 3 to his new employers.
(This is where it gets confusing lol ) Before the Christmas of 2011 he was claiming JSA up until he managed to find temporary work with an employment agency for 6 weeks throughout the Christmas period.
The job centre sent his P45 when he signed off JSA and he realised he forgot to give in parts 2 and 3 to the agency.
So he now has two sets of P45 (2x part 2 and 2x part 3)
What does he do with the parts of 2 and 3 of his first P45? (sorry if this is a dumb question
He knows he is due for a tax rebate but who deals with that? Is it his new employers or the job centre?
Kind Regards

Regarding tax paid for last year, once you have all the details of earnings and tax paid for 11/12 tax year write to the tax office.
Has he had a payment from his new employer yet and if so what was the tax code and basis used on this and when was it paid?
What was the tax code and basis on the P45s?
His new employer should have asked him to fill in a P46 or their own form to replace this, if this happened which section did he tick A B or C?
The basis will show on the P45s as either an X in the box following the tax code or as an empty box, on the payslips it may be X or 1 or cumulative or something like that.0 -

Yes, my husband received his first weekly payment last week on the 5th April,(he is paid weekly) The tax code used on his payslip was 747L W1.In the wk/mth box it says 53..
What was the tax code and basis on the P45s?
The latest p45 has an 'X' in the box.Tax code 747L. The first p45 (part 2 and 3)both have an empty box. Tax Code 755L (laundry relief for his work clothes in his previous job)
His new employer should have asked him to fill in a P46 or their own form to replace this, if this happened which section did he tick A B or C?
His new employers didn't ask him to fill in a P46,he was just told to wait until his P45 came through from the job centre.

Thank you Chrisbur, I have replied to your questions in bold above. Hope this is ok...

The employer should not have used 747L week 1 without having a P46 completed; so it is difficult to advise as whatever you do the employer may not do what they are supposed to do.
If the laundry relief no longer applies.
I would be inclined to hand in the last P45 747L week 1 so that the employer will use that to confirm to the tax office that employment has started. The tax code should then be converted to the new basic code for this year 810L and applied on a cumulative basis.
You will also need to advise the tax office that the laundy relief no longer applies.
If the laundry relief still applies.
I would be inclined to hand in the earlier P45 755L cumulative which should then be increased to 818L cumulative, and the tax office advised that employment has started.
Of course the employer may not do what they are supposed to so if he ends on the wrong code he will have to contact the tax office.0 -
Thank you chrisbur for your help
Could you possibly help with another question regarding my husbands P60 which he received today from his new employers..
As you know from my previous post that my husband had 3 different employers and had also claimed JSA in between looking for employment from 2011 to 2012
However, his end of year P60 certificate (tax year to 5th April 2012 does not show any details regarding his previous employments? or any income details for JSA? (the 'in previous employment' box is zero) why is this? It only shows income details for his new job which he started on the 19th March 2012. The 'Previous Tax Deducted' box is also showing zero?
He has gathered all his payslips and calculated (from all jobs) and he has paid a total of 1036 pound income tax for the whole year of (April 2011- April 2012 )We added all his earnings together for the year plus his JSA minus his personal allowance etc..and out of the 1036 his tax liability is roughly about 600 odd pound for the year and the rest would be his tax rebate...
Can you throw any light on this for me please?0
