Problem with Santander account for an NZ national

Hey everyone, thanks a lot for the input, it's good to get different views on things.
After some calm reflection we've decided to approach some other banks with the aim of setting up an account that let's my partner have a debit card - it's not the end of the world but it's just nice if she can pay for stuff online with it etc (otherwise I have to!).
Given Santander's rubbish customer service we'll just close her current account once she's changed, it's not worth the rise in blood pressure trying to do anything else.
We were thinking about getting a joint account anyway, so we can pool our savings and get more interest, and also because it's time to renew her visa next year (fingers crossed on that one).
My girlfriend says kia ora back to the kiwi fulla too.0
