Advice on possible food poisoning whilst on holiday

Hi all.
I'm on holiday in Lanzarote at the minute in an all inclusive resort. I arrived Thursday and since Saturday I have had bad Diarrhoea and stomach cramps. I'm in bed at the minute and have hardly eaten anything the last few days. last night I was very sick, I also had a very bad fever on the Sunday night.
My holiday has been completely ruined by this. What steps should I be taking to give me good grounds to complain to my travel agent? I've not eaten anywhere else at all. I'm more than willing to go speak to the manager And to visit a GP. What is the best course of action t o take regarding samples etc?
Thanks in advance.

Do you and others that are sharing your accommodation always wash your hands after going to the loo?
I'm playing devil's advocate here, there are possibly other causes, it may not necessarily be their food that is causing the problem.
Are others ill with the same problems?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Firstly, has anyone else at the hotel been suffering?
If you are an isolated case then it may be a bug which you picked up even before flying out.
You would need to be absolutely certain the fault lays in Lanzarote before taking any form of action against the holiday company/hotel.0 -
Hi Richard and thanks. Nope, you're right. I dot want to go around accusing the hotel but it does seem to be the only clue. I'm pretty anal about washing my hands, I've been drinking plenty of water, not drinking the tap water etc.
I'm not aware of anyone being ill but we eat fairly different things as I'm the only vegetarian.
This is partly why I'd like to prove it one way or the other. I'm just so gutted to be trapped in bed on my holiday0 -
I would first contact the rep. They will be able to arrange a doctor for a diagnosis and also should know if there has been any other illness in the hotel. If so you can get evidence and complain to the holiday company when home.
As a veggie is there anything raw that you have eaten that could have been washed in tap water? any cooled rice?Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
Good to see you haven't lost your sense of humour with this. Anyone with diarrhoea who says they're 'anal about washing their hands', and are feeling gutted should be writing gags (oops, there I go again) for Tim Vine
Hope I haven't offended - get well soon!0 -
Make sure you do speak to the rep and see that they fill out an illness form. It will only help your case if you do decide to take it further.:beer:0

Hi
Hope you are feeling better soon. As a vegetarian myself I consider that we are usually low risk. Of course you could have contact with raw chicken etc, maybe on a chopping board or similar, but then other guests would be likely to have it too.
As for washing salad etc in tap water, that would be the norm. Tap water is drinkable in Lanzarote, I know it is because I've drunk it and never fell ill. I doubt a small amount of tap water could cause that, after all dishes are also washed in tap water.
I can sympathise though, was recently in Delhi....you can guess the rest. I had to take Imodium as I was travelling etc, however it's best to let the bug out of your system naturally. Definitely report it to the manager. Try to get some sort of rehydration medication from a pharmacy if you can.
Hope you manage to recover and enjoy some of your trip.0 -
