Trouble with car dealership - what are my consumer rights?
Hello! This is my first post, so be gentle!
My dad has recently traded in his Mini in part-exchange for a Skoda Yeti. The Mini was quite new, but gave his back awful jip... So in other words, it was still worth quite a bit! So he bought this near-new Yeti (ex-demo) in part-exchange.
Day 1 with the new Yeti and my dad goes to start it up... nothing. The car's not working at all. He calls the Skoda dealership he bought it from and about 30 hours later they come along with a courtesy car and take the new car away. This was now over a week ago; since then he has heard next to nothing from the garage about what is wrong with the car or what they're doing to remedy the situation. He's now starting to wonder if he wants to back out of this altogether... but this is where we're slightly uncertain of his consumer rights.
Presumably, if he's been sold a duff car, he has a right to ask for his money back. Right? But also, what if the garage has already shipped out the Mini he part-exchanged and are unable to return it? Would he be due compensation in this case?
Any help or advice would be very gratefully received!
Thanks.

Why don't you first phone the garage and ask them what's happening with the Yeti?

powerwin - Thanks for your reply. Obviously, I'm asking on behalf of my Dad so I don't know exactly what he has & hasn't found out, but I do know that he's called several times and been told by a receptionist that someone will get back to him, but nobody has.0

s b - Thanks, I'll tell my Dad to keep trying to call the garage. And don't worry, I've been through all the Yeti & Skoda jokes I can think of!0

TBH I expect the garage will be able to fix the Yeti. I believe Skoda's have quite a good reputation for build quality, being owned by VW.
I don't have time to research the full legal details, but if there was some major problem with the Yeti, then I expect any compensation would relate to this car and then the cost of the Mini. I feel it would be unlikely they'd get the Mini back for you, too difficult business-wise, but they'd compensate you for it financially.
Regardless, I reckon you'll get your Yeti fixed if it's a Skoda dealership.
