I'm a bit puzzled as to why Nationwide have requested a structural survey. They did not require one on our house last autumn, only a valuation report which would have accepted it if not for the asbestos roof. Neither did Halifax require one (my dad's steel engineer friend looked at it informally, nothing to do with the mortgage company).

Do check it does not have its original asbestos roof as otherwise Nationwide will decline it and charge for the survey. If it does, go to Halifax.

The original asbestos roof is very distinctive:

"Most non-residential buildings are built this way after all."

Not really true. It's more to do with the tradition of building in the country - most people in the UK expect a house to be built out of brick, stone or concrete blocks and so that's what builders build. In other countries, people expect different things eg in America or Australia or Scandinavia a wooden house would be completely normal.

Also, around the same time as the BISF houses were built, many types of system-built house were made. Some types turned out to have serious structural defects. Many people confuse the different types of system-built house and imagine they are all prone to similar faults.
