Playtrade counterfeit DVDs

I wondered if anyone had any experience of how Play Trade handle counterfeit items? I have received a counterfeit copy of a DVD box set, (that was also damaged in the post) and have received the predicatable reply from the seller that it's an original copy and asking me to return for a refund.

Lest anyone think I'm wrong, the packaging has fuzzy logos, the BBFC logos vary in colour on the discs, and scan lines can be seen on the packaging. It's a good copy but it's not the real thing.

There are a couple of issues - firstly he's asking me to send it to a different address it was sent from (it was sent RD), secondly I'm always a bit wary about posting something I know is fake.

Any thoughts or comments?

  • Probably a counterfeit import from China, I wouldn't pay to return a counterfeit set, Play have a Fairplay guarantee although I couldn't find how it works in the help pages.

I stopped selling on PlayTrade because they refused to remove sellers obviously selling counterfeit goods and won't buy any DVD box sets on there either. I know there are lots of good deals and lots of honest sellers but Play's attitude doesn't inspire me with any confidence.

May I ask which title you purchased, how much it was and whether it was 'new'?

The item was 'The Killing' seasons 1 and 2 and it cost £20 new which in retrospect should have given me cause to question the authenticity of the product. But Play doesn't have the same reputation for fakery as eBay (or so I thought) so I was more trusting than I would have been on an auction site.
  • I would call Play and ask them how to open a case for having received counterfeit goods, if Play tell you you have to return the goods and you paid by a VISA card, I wouldn't bother and would can recall the transaction via the bank.

If you have two addresses for the seller I'd contact HMRC on 0800 788 887 and report the individual for importing counterfeit products into our country.

Sadly a lot of people selling counterfeits on Play, Amazon, eBay and private websites. In this case the company that owns the distribution rights is an independent studio and piracy really does harm the smaller studios.

Well I've put in a FairPlay guarantee claim and also reported to local trading standards and will see how I get on. I suspect though I may well end up having to put this down to experience, but let's see. It was a MasterCard purchase so if Playtrade don't help I'll get onto them.

Lest it be of interest to anyone - according to my Play account I have been refunded. I only know this because I checked - Play trade communication is shockingly bad - won't use again other than from an established retailer, dreadful experience. Back to Amazon Marketplace for me!

After the last person who didn't send an item out until I raised a dispute I'm inclined to agree. It's like - I know there are lots of honest electronics sellers on eBay and a lot of people get good deals, but not me - so just like I've stopped buying electronics on eBay, I've stopped buying DVDs on Playtrade, though I will still buy from the main company.

Also their prices are not always as good as Amazon's anyway.
