I have been using the same ISP for years so I'm well out of contract I'm just paying month by month.
Because I have a slow broadband connection I then qualify for a grant to have a high speed wireless connection.
My question is am I paying in advance for my current broadband or are they billing me for the month thats gone past.
I don't want to transfer over to the wireless company and end up paying for a months broadband to my current provider when there is no need for me to do that.
I hope that makes sense

I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

It's usually in advance. BUT you usually also have give 30 days notice and because you're not transferring your broadband service you might also have to pay a fee to close the line down (or whatever it's called). You need to talk to your ISP and find out just what you will be charged.0

It's different from Migrating (getting your MAC code and moving it to elsewhere) It's physically stopping the service, and depends I guess on whether they get charges, as to whether your ISP passes them on to you. If you call up and ask about it, they will be able to tell you more.0

If you cease your ADSL broadband completely, or migrate without using a MAC then there will be a £25 cease charge. This is applied by BT OR and passed on by your ISP.
Nothing to do with being in or out of contract.
NB: you are not actually out of contract. You are out of your minimum term contract, you still have to give 30 days notice. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I recently closed down my broadband with Zen Internet completely without getting any other broadband on the line and wasn't charged any fee.
I gave 30 days notice and for the month my broadband ended i was only charged for the part of the month i was connected.0 -

Some companies absorb the cost, and some pass it on.I was charged when I closed down my broadband prior to moving. To sweeten the deal somewhat, if I rejoined within 90 days of closing the line down, I would get what I paid back, in a free service for 1 month (the cost of closing it down)
It's hit an miss per ISP as to whether they do charge, or not, and can only be found out by phoning up, due to the length of time that someone has been with them, means they could be on old terms and conditions (not always available on an isp web search)
The 30 days notice is standard and doesn't mean that if you've just had 4 days of a new month, that your 30 days will start at the end of the current billing month/period. It starts from the day that you give said notice (or sometimes the day after, 00:00 etc) so if you're 4 days into a new payment month, give your quitting notice, then all you need to do is carry out the next 30 days, then be charged for the 4 days of service (not another full 30; unless obviously stated in the T&C which no one ever reads, yet blithely agrees too, which is also where these charges are stated)0 -

Maybe, but this is presumably down to them forgetting to charge you. It'll still be in the T&C's that they can.
I had this experience with Plusnet a couple of years ago: I was advised of the charge when i cancelled, but they failed to bill it.No free lunch, and no free laptop
