Another mattress thread (sorry!) - please help

I have spent the last 5 hours reading through posts on various forums and I'm at an absolute loss on which mattress to buy.

I've been using an Ikea memory foam mattress for the last few years, and it is bloody awful! It slumps in the middle, it's too hot, and it HAS to go. I know whichever mattress I buy is going to be slightly smaller than the Ikea bed frame I have but it will be a small price to pay for waking up without back ache,

What I am after is a medium-firm double mattress, pocket sprung which can be turned over. I've got a budget of about £350.

There seems to be very little agreement on the bigger name brand mattresses.

I've just found a family run company called purelybeds who seem to offer what I'm looking for, but I can't find any reviews.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated - I had no idea it would be this difficult to buy a mattress!

  • pocket sprung mattresses can't be turned because essentially you'd be sleeping on the bottom of the springs. If you're looking for a decent brand name mattress i'd recommend King Koil (they're an Irish company based in Co. Kildare - but think they are available nationwide). The do have different names but the Northern Ireland version of a pocket sprung medium to firm mattress is called Rhapsody (the version with less springs & memory foam is Regatta).

    Hope this helps!
  • Thanks for the reply, I've seen a few pocket sprung mattresses being advertised as double sided, now I'm even more confused!

Can't offer advice on a mattress but it might be worth going to a more independent bed store and seeing if they can order the longer mattress

I have some continental bunk beds on order and they are ordering us the longer mattress to go with it

That's a thought, although I'm thinking I may replace the bed with a standard size bed some time in the future so my current frame will probably make do for now. I'm more concerned with getting a decent night's sleep at the minute!
  • Ive been looking at the La Romantica Charlotte and the Kozeesleep Ortho Pocket, are these any good in terms of quality? Any guidance at all would be appreciated.

YES you can get double sided pocket sprung mattresses, they have always in the past been turnable. It's really only in the last 5-10 years that mattresses have become 1 sided.

That's really only due to the better quality fillings like memory foam and latex, but look hard enough and even those can be turnable too.

£350 will get a mid-good pocket sprung mattress, look for 1000 springs or more.

Restus make a nice product, The Saturn, Cashmere and Chatsworth models are all pretty good.

I'll also second the recommendation for King Coil products they do seem to be very well made, but think that they are mainly memory foam. Which is were I feel the confusion about turning a mattress may have come from.

    Hope that helps a little.

Apologies i've been selling king koil products as past 10 years and from my knowledge they've never done a turnable pocket sprung mattress. they don't only do memory foam, they have started doing gel mattresses within the past 3 years.

OP have a nosey on sweet dreams website, think their prices are mid range www.sweetdreamsuk.com
  • Thanks for the replies.

Just when I think I've found one I end up finding a bad review and I'm back to square one!

I've never had a pocket sprung mattress before, but I've read that even the firmer ones are not as firm as other types of bed, anyone got any idea about this? I don't want to go for something listed as medium when it is in fact more like a soft, if that makes sense?

Why don't you try an Ikea sprung mattress ? I've had one for 5 years now and I'm really happy with it... it will also fit the bed perfectly...

My parents bought an Ikea sprung mattress around the same time as me and they're looking to change theirs now too - I'm just not sure I trust the quality if I'm honest. I've just seen a decent looking solid pine bed frame for £160 which I could probably afford in the near future, so I'm not too worried about the mattress being a perfect fit for my current frame.
