First Direct return direct debit

Can anyone tell me does First Direct allow you until a certain time to pay in money to cover direct debits coming out that day?
I noticed a direct debit come out of my account that took me over my limit. I paid in the money in the morning to cover the direct debit, thinking for some reason I had until the end of the day to cover the direct debit.
I just received a letter saying it had been returned and £25 fee.
Thanks!

From the example you've stated, I'd say obviously not.0

If ever there was a reason to keep my DD's at Lloyds you've just given it.0

The money has to be there the working day before its due. So if it was due today, the money needed to be there by close of business on Thursday.
If you don't have the cash, the standard £250 overdraft normally covers it.0 -
Also. with First Direct there was a posting on here to say that FD report failed Direct Debits to the credit reference agencies which I don't think is on.0

After sending them a message online, they've agreed to refund the charges as a good gesture. Thanks for the responses.0

Can I believe what I am reading that the ever so nice First Direct mob have returned a dd. I always thought it was the nasty high street banks who did that.
Only goes to prove First direct are and in my opinion utterly useless.0 -

I have always found them very helpful. Last Saturday a Barclays cash machine swallowed my debit card for an unknown reason. FD authorised HSBC to give me £50 from my account to tide me over until after the Easter bank holiday. The replacement debit card arrived today which was sooner than I had expected.
There should not normally be a problem with the DD as long as you have the allowed £250 overdraft.0 -
I'm probably being unfair to First Direct but I remember having an account with them about 18 years ago and wanted an overdraft. I phoned up and had to go through everything on my bank statement. After 20 minutes I advised the advisor I had enough and closed the account then.
Would be interested to hear whether they improved since those days but
I am happy with Lloyds for my main account.0
