I am switching my gas and electricity supplier.

I have now had a letter from my old supplier, saying they are sorry bla bla bla. I went on line to check my account and it says the contract end date will be Monday 16/4/12.

I assume I will have to do this meter reading, although neither the old or new supplier has actually told me to do this (yet).

When shall I do the reading, that morning, evening, at midnight ?????

You will be asked by the gaining supplier to take and pass them a reading on or around the transfer date (exact time not important). The gaining supplier sends the reading to the losing supplier. Remember to make a note of the reading.

Look out for exactly the same reading subsequently appearing on both the final and opening bills.

Just to add ...if you have a digital camera, take photos of these closing meter reads in case you can't find the "bit of paper" you wrote them down on,when months later, you get the closing bill from your previous supplier!!:)

that is good advice, for the sake of a few hours it will make no difference, a fraction of a unit.

As already said, keep a note of readings, and also readings from new premises upon entry.

A supplier is only allowed to submit a change of supply reading inside a very tight timeframe. If they do it early, it will be ignored, if too late, the agent will have already Deemed a reading and it will be used over the suppliers customer reading unless the supplier works harder to get it replaced which is only likely if they aren't close.

The supplier will need it within 5 days of the switch date so you should get a letter very soon, possibly delayed by bank holidays.
