Hi all, just a quick post to ask if any of you have ever received debit card charges when making an online payment to an overseas website?

Lloyds TSB have just charged me for making such a payment and on querying this they claim the charge is from Visa. They were very vague about the whole thing and stated the charges are defined in their T&C'S. Which I cannot find at all.

I realise there is always a charge for using your card abroad and for foreign currency but for simply making an online payment? I make online payments all the time to Amazon.com, Ebay.com, Netflix etc and have never been charged before so why now?

Any advice would be helpful thanks.

Was your payment in Sterling or in foreign currency? If you paid in a foreign currency it would be treated in the same way as a purchase made in a shop abroad.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
  • My payment was to an online Canadian website for $4.99 but on my statement it said £3.23 and then overseas transaction £1.00.

I have checked their T&C'S but I cannot find any mention of online charges.

The thing I don't get is that I pay for other overseas products and have never received any charges so why now? And why blame Visa?

As well as the £1 charge there's a 2.99% exchange rate markup. Get a card which doesn't rip you off with forex charges, eg Halifax Clarity.
