Salmon Oil

After reading on here that Salmon oil was a good supplement for coat, joints and heart, I bought some at the weekend for my dog.

He had some today on his food. I went out for a couple of hours tonight and when I came back, boy had he been sick.
Luckily only in his bed, but it was swimming in it. I think he had been drinking a lot. It stinks awful too.

I've had to change all his bedding, it was all over some of his toys too.

I hadn't given him as much as it said on the bottle, certainly won't be giving him anymore either!!

Just like humans, some dogs can have food allergies or intolerances to things that the majority are fine with. I've heard of the odd dog with a meat intolerance - now that's strange!
It might be a coincidence that he was sick after having it but if you don't want to give it to him again, then there are alternative supplements for joint health - for example, he may tolerate a non-fish based oil better, Yumega is the plant-based version of salmon oil.
Alternatively you could see if he tolerates oily fish better, e.g. the odd tin of mackerel, tuna, salmon, etc. once in a while.

Was it human strength? If so ask your Vet nicely and they will usually work out the correct doggy dose for you.
But I am with krlyr on this one, try oily fish, or even Cod liver oil. x

Just be careful with cod liver oil supplements - in addition to commercial foods which are supplemented with vitamins, you may risk a buildup of Vitamin A (the excess isn't just excreted like with many other vitamins) which can be toxic. Given once in a while, it will be fine, but it's not the kind of supplement you should give daily, unlike salmon oil. Other fish body oils would be safe though - it's the liver bit that's the problem.

As with any supplements I wouldnt dream of giving them to my dog without asking the Vet first.
They will point you in the right direction and of course work out the dose for the size/weight of your dog. xx

    Hi,
No it wasn't human one it was a dog supplement.
We had been away for the weekend and he had been playing with another Boxer. The people we were with have 3 Boxers, did have 4 but lost one recently at a young age through cancer. They were saying that they give theirs a splash of the same salmon oil on their dinners everyday, not the doseage it says on the pack, just one pump of it. So I thought I'd try it as it is supposed to be good for heart, joints and coat.
My dog is used to fish as he has a tin of sardines in sunflower oil once or twice a week anyway. He also has a Jointcare stick, propolis - for his joints and immune system, and garlic oil tablets for his heart (he's got a murmer), each day. Yesterday, I hadn't given him any of those before I went out, the only thing that was different was the salmon oil.
He had had some salmon crunch treats over the weekend and been fine with those, but the oil certainly didn't seem to suit him.
I gave him some Natural yogurt to settle his tummy and he's fine this morning.

The propolis I have always given to him, it had really good results with the joints of one of my other dogs and the vet was so impressed with how it had made my dog's joints more mobile that they started taking it themselves and even got some for a family member with arthritis. I also take it myself each day.
The jointcare sticks were recommended by the vet as an easy way of giving glucosamine etc. and they also suggested the garlic tablets as a natural flea repellant and for his heart.
I had not asked about the salmon oil but had read on here that it was a good supplement for skin etc. I'm sure it is and I'm not knocking it, it just didn't suit my dog. You don't know till you try though.
  • Hope he's feeling better today Dollar .... I've been reading the various threads on salmon oil with interest.

Although all our dogs have had glucosamine, chrondroitin, MSM and, in some cases, green lipped mussels, it's not been until they've been older and arthritis has set in.

Thinking when the next dog arrives, I'll start him/her on something like salmon oil in the hope that starting at a younger age may help the dreaded A setting in / or at least not be as bad.

I've come across this which a couple of people have recommended so may be giving it a go:
