That's a good idea try the windows Update.

But firstly I would try your laptop elsewhere with a freind who has a wi-fi connection and if it holds then you can be sure it has something to do with the channel your router is on.

But from experience from what you have described the wi-fi adaptor card is faulty and they are relatively easy to replace. But i must stress always back up your data.

What brand is your laptop? because you can call the manufacturer up for some advice they will be able to clarify it over the phone with you, some manufacturers are not helpful but some are.

But do the first step and the simplest step of checking your machine on another wi-fi, then you can determine your next course of action.

If you need help with changning your SSID Channel which is a simple thing, you can call Virgin who will be able to go through it over the phone with you.

Don't download any software you don't understand without backing up your work, photos etc...
    ewwwww what is that...

And don't let buying it from somewhere like tescodirect put you off sending it back if there is a problem. Mine was back in 2 days when sent back to (sorry, can't remember if it was Acer or Asus). Excellent courier service too. Can honestly say there was no hassles or anything in sending my dd's laptop back at all.

yeah that's a good point, it is actually stress free, they collect it from you and return it to you. you don't need to ship your laptop anywhere. best to get it sorted out now, in case it happens again because you will have the error reported on file and i think if the fault persists you are entitled to have your money back.

    Thanks for all the help.

There were a couple of updates, but the problem is still occuring.

Tried to log into the router, but the URL(from the side of the modem), is giving an error ('Page not Available' from memory), even though I went in at Xmas to configure the laptop.

Gonna take it to a friends to see if its our wi-fi thats the problem.

    :(
