Oyster Card Activation?

Hi guys, I wonder if anyone can help?

I ordered an Oyster card a couple of weeks ago, have now used all the credit on there and would like to top it up. The problem is though, where and how do I get it activated? I've been told that I need to do so at a train station but I don't use them; I use my card for bus journeys. Would the card be activated if I top-up at a newsagent?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to the leaflet I got when I picked mine up you register your card at https://www.tfl.gov.uk/oyster . Then you can top up in units of £5 - if you have a debit/credit card of course. I haven`t needed to top mine up yet so I can`t tell you if it works ok. Please let me know if it does.
A question of my own now. How do you know how much credit you have left without going on-line? Don`t want the embarassment of being turfed off the bus one day.

You can top up and check your balance at selected shops in London that are Oyster Ticket stops.

Also you can check your balance on the card reader as you enter the bus, if you look quickly (but it will also deduct the fare at the same time)
