Is it the sort of presentation where you'll be covering Lord Laming's report The Protection of Children in England and the earlier Acheson Report on health inequalities? or taking along a baby doll and talking about nappy rash?

Your handout might be some graphs illustrating your key statistical points and references and pointers to further information.

The subject is The Role of the Health Visitor - I'm applying to train as a Health Visitor

Get a few job description and personel specs and make sure you cover key points.

PRACTICE in front of someone loads of times.

Be prepared for question based on what you say
  • Thanks everyone for your replies - marybelle01 is the answer I was hoping for! I have four specific points to cover so I think a minute on each with some intro & conclusion will be all I can do!
Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
  • Just have to try & jazz up the handout a bit

But don't forget that if you are running 45 seconds short, you could do a role play, cover a couple of major reports, or do a quick synopsis of the evolution of human kind :)

    Have to agree with marybelle01
They are looking to see if you have considered the role you are applying for. Not interested in fancy props, just "Do you understand what the job is about?"
They may ask you to expand on the areas you have covered so I would have some more in-depth answers ready, just in case.
As has been suggested, when to refer to other agencies, not being judgemental about circumstances, the importance of getting the full picture/history/treatment etc. You can use any of these.
I would have more than 4-5 key points and maybe bring them in at an appropriate point in the interview (if possible) Or, use them to help you pitch some questions at the end of the interview. It shows you are interested in the role.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.

I have to do similar in a few days. They also want a 500 word written summary printed to hand in. The time pressure means you need to be clear, concise, and get the important information in there on which they have stated you will be assessed. Searching on the net I found the average presentation would be delivered at 100 words per minute. A 5 minute presentation, therefore, adds up to their 500 word maximum summary. I suggest writing a script of around 500 words, as when you start getting it down on paper - you will start to see which bits are superfluous and can be left out, to let you add more important bits.

For mine I will be asked questions about the presentation after - not sure if it's the same for you? If so, do plenty of preparation for that also. No point in a great presentation and being unable to answer questions well.
Wanted a job, now have one.

Just write it up using Powerpoint to get it clearly laid out, timed and into your memory then present it to the panel orally, without aids

The handout should be kept simple, perhaps a printout of the powerpoint slides, 4 to a page, double sided to keep it slim

Don't overegg it, they will be interested in the content, the clarity and your confidence
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

    First of all relax....

I regularly do presentations of 10 minutes or more without props or Powerpoint. I do this as a preference now as I find people switch off when Powerpoint goes on - I call it death my Powerpoint. My feedback has improved 100% for presentations and it was ok before.

Go back to the presentation basics off.

    Preparation

    Practise

    Presentation

    Passion

Preparation - do a mind map, Identify 5 key points you want to make, get little A5 cards (old fashioned index cards work best) and write each of the key points as a headline.

Under each headline put 5 points you want to cover.

Punch a hole in the corner of your cards and tie together with string. Your cards will fit in the palm of your hand.

Now do an introduction, the introduction should cover. Who you are and what you will cover in the presention. ( your 5 key points)

e.g. My name is Mary Beaton and today I am going to tell you about Victoria Sandwiches. I will cover the history of the Victoria Sandwich, the key uses of the cake, people who love to eat the cake, how to make a perfect Victoria Sandwich, variations on the Victorian sandwich and I will finish with questions.

Now do a finish. - A simple thank you for listening, do you have any questions is usually fine.

Now practise - facing a clock, start making your points and time yourself.

keep in mind presentation - eye contact, body language.

    and Passion

    Show enthusiasm for the subject.

Keep your handouts simple. 5 pages in total , your 5 key points on each page. A bit of narrative under each point.

    good luck
  • Some really useful advice - I really appreciate it thanks everyone
