car insurance - no huge excess for young drivers?

hi all. i'm due to renew my car insurance at the beginning of april. i've been shopping around on the comparison sites etc. and i can't seem to find any companies that don't charge a silly amount for young drivers. i'm with norwich union at the mo and my excess is something like £550! i'm not expecting a £0 excess but a bit less than £550 would be nice :) any ideas? i'm 22 and female by the way, should have 1 years no claims bonus (touch wood)

Most companies have a compulsary young driver excess of £300, plus other excesses takes it up to £550

And anyways, if you do find a way to lower the excesses, the premium will go up!

Inexperienced drivers frequently miss judge gaps etc causing minor damage to their cars. By loading the excess it prevents people from being able to claim for these sorts of incidents and therefore greatly reduces their premium.

If you think your premium is high now just wait to see what it would be if you have nil xs

Direct Line (and therefore I suspect the rest of the RBS brands) charge £250 compulsory excess for a 22 year old. If you set the voluntary excess to £0 then this is all you would have to pay for an AD claim

If The Excesses Are Around 550, It Will Prob Be Made Up Of A Compulsory Excess (for Being A Young Driver) And Then A Voluntary Excess, Which You Can Change.
If You Do Lower The Voluntary Excess Then The Total Excess Will Come Down, But Yes, Your Annual Premium Will Then Go Up.

Shop around then! Depending on where you are in the country, a 22-year-old female with 1 year's no claims should be paying around £500 for a small, cheap car.
