Try a Bosch AXT 2000, £120 at B&Q. It is a simple machine, basically a lawn mower blade spinning at high speed, with wood fed in edge on to the blade. The blade will wear out, and I think it can be reversed. It does not completely shred wood, you often get thin strips, but they compost much quicker than the unshredded wood. Fred's Shed goes into more details, comparing various machines.

Hmmm.
Bit of an overkill if you just want to shred the odd bank statement.0 -
I do apologise, I meant a domestic shredder for confidential waste. Thanks0

if paranoid then you might want to consider a 'cross cut' shredder even if not paranoid, the waste takes up a lot less space
"After the Iranian Revolution and the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979, Iranians enlisted local carpet weavers who reconstructed the pieces by hand. The recovered documents would be later released by the Iranian regime in a series of books called "Documents from the US espionage Den"."

I find that filling the sink with hot soapy water, putting the paperwork in that and wait for it to go to mush squeeze the water out, put it in a plastic carrier bag and bin it.The ink usually comes off before it turns to mush.....:)0

Cross cut shredders, quite cheap at Argos.
You might want to look around at Rymans and other stationary shops for a deal.
You should be able to pick up a decent one for under £20."Real knowledge is knowing the extent of one's ignorance."0 -
I got my cross cut shredder from Lidl a few years ago now & it's great. It also shreds credit cards & data cds. Only thing with Lidl is they have some good offers, but sometimes you have to wait a few months for some of the things to come round again if you miss out first time round. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
