What is a .rar file?

A friend of mine has sent me some scans and they appear as a .rar file. Which program should I use?

Use something like 7-zip (it's free to download / use)

One option
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Go for the 32 bit msi file, install it, right click the scan .rar file, click extract to, then there are options, probably best to go with the option named the same as the .rar file0 -
.rar files are compressed file(s). They're a slightly geekier, less common version of .zip files.
