"Insufficient storage available" on Android phone

I have an Orange SF with a total of 38 apps including some that were there when I rooted it.
There are updates available for 4 of the apps, but when I try to update them it says "insufficient storage available".
It does have an SD card installed, but I have no idea if I am supposed to save them to the card or how to do it.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

if you go into settings > Applications > Manage Applications you can move some apps to the SD card from there. Unfortunately you cant move them all so you may still need to delete a few to update. Personally i do not update unless theres features i would use or the program would work better with it. If its fine it may be worth leaving it aloneSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

Thanks for that. I had a play with the phone and found that I could move some apps, but as you say you can't move some of them. Hopefully that will free up enough space.
Does 38 apps sound like a lot? I don't think it is as I rarely add any and the ones I do are to monitor usage or preserve battery power, etc.0 -
if you haven't already done it. clearing your cache, history, cookies etc will free up space"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

I followed the rooting instructions at
http://www.sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk/
I didn't go down the custom ROM route, instead I removed the game demos and other useless Orange stuff using FileExpert.
I think there are better ways of doing this (following the rest of the instructions for instance !) but this worked for me.
That got me back to having enough space.
On the Android 2.1 as supplied applications seem to have to exist in a small amount of memory. The SD card only stores some data and media.0 -
if you download the app link2sd then you can go threw all apps and move to your external sd card

custom rom is the way forward if you still have the original orange rom. i flashed swedish spring and have 100 mb of free internal storage with 48 apps in app drawer"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

see if you can move dalvik cache to your SD as well ( a decent rom should do this). I have a HTC desire which had the same sort of problem, now I have just over 100mb free (or 9Gb, depending how you count), and, at last titanium backup, 266 apps (including system ones)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Thanks for the replies.
I went through each application and cleared the cache. How do I clear the history and cookies on an Orange SF?
It is already rooted with Swedish Spring installed. I have just checked and it has 56.98MB available space which doesn't sound like a lot. There were quite a few apps that I could't move to the SD card.0 -
The easiest thing that i do when this happens is just uninstall one of the apps i have that uses a lot of internal space. then just reinstall it when iv update the apps that report they need more space to update.
usually ill remove adobe flash <-- it just unistalls updates (on MY non rooted phone) and frees up enough usually.- Chez0 -
