Apologies for long post :o

My PC is almost 7 years old: Dell Inspiron 3000 Intel Celeron CPU 2.66GHz. 2.66GHz 512MB of RAM. Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3

I use it mainly for online shopping, banking, holiday research, MSE Forum etc and for fairly simple documents & spreadsheets. Also store photos, which could be moved to external hard drive, and listen to music, though sound not brilliant, and occasionally watch iPlayer and use Skype.

I thought I’d follow the ‘How to speed up’ guide but hit a few snags :o

1 – 3 Done

Re 4 – 6: I’m reluctant to download Avast 7 Free and uninstall all my security software, though I have uninstalled Superantispyware. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Rapport and regularly run Malwarebytes. Is it really necessary to uninstall them and install Avast? I’ve read the whole thread on Rapport, but to be honest, it has not caused me any problems and several of the banks I use recommend it.

7 – 9 Done

RE 10: Tried to uninstall BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem but get error message ‘Error loading newdev.dll’ and then ‘Administrator priviledges are required to install, uninstall or configure the DSL software’
Tried to uninstall BT Voyager Modem AOL Test get error message ‘Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file’

I thought I had managed to finally uninstall AOL last year. I am administrator, so don’t understand the error messages.

I’m not sure whether I should try to uninstall Modem Helper and Modem on Hold. I have a Cisco Linksys ADSL Modem Router but can’t see that anywhere in the programmes list.

11 Done

12: As I haven’t a clue what the impact of disabling all these services would be I’m very reluctant to do it

Here is my ‘After’ hijack this log. Even to me the stuff at 018 looks wrong. It’s a Logitech webcam, used infrequently for Skype.

As my PC is so old I’m thinking of replacing it – I’d quite like to join the 21st Century. I’m not confident enough to upgrade as suggested in many of the threads on here but any advice would be appreciated :)

XP is a 21st Century OS, so why do the tasks you specify need upgraded kit?

I would suggest that that is a perfectly adaquate amount for his needs. Remember, the version of Windows he is using was sold with PCs equipped with just 256MB of RAM.

if you want it to run as good as it can, remove mse and rapport, switch to avast, and disable the services mentioned, also use ie instead of chrome, and delete the google update task

tick and fix the (no file)'s and O16 - dpf's

if you don't use logitech messenger, uninstall it.

moving data to external drives is a risky process if it's your only copy.

While I agree that new PCs come with a gratuitously large amount of RAM these days, 512MB for XP is only just adequate, largely because internet browsing is a more graphically-intensive experience than when XP first came out, and people (like me) tend to have lots and lots of tabs open at the same time.

And a second 512Mb (if there's space, or two if not) should be cheap enough on eBay not to worry about - if you avoid the stupid £30 buy it now prices it shouldn't cost more than £5 shipped.

If there isn't a second space, why would you buy two of anything?

Perhaps the OP is referring to a Dimension ™ 3000 Desktop , as opposed to the Inspiron 3000.

Probably supplied with 512MB of PC2700. £11 for another 512MB

    If PC3200, here for £8.99

If, for example, it already has two slots with 256MB in each, I would take them out and throw them away (or send them for recycling) and replace with two 512MB.

If it has one 512MB and a free slot, then just buy a matching 512MB.

    Other combinations may be possible...

Well worth trying another 0.5GB of RAM-somewhat cheaper than a new PC!
Do a clean install of XP and it'll run better than new.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks to everyone for their responses.

I've done a complete backup of the hard disk to an external hard drive using Acronis, so might risk some of the scarier sounding solutions offered here. If anything goes horribly wrong, I'll be able to restore from that?

PC came with XP pre loaded. I don't have a disc so don't think I can do a clean install.

I thought that after 7 years, a new PC with more RAM / faster processor / bigger / newer whatever would be a good idea.

If I increase the RAM, would I for example, be able to install Windows 7?

Not that it matters (for the purposes of this forum :rotfl:) but I'm a she :)
