T5000(T5525) + FreeNAS

Hi Guys!

I have got an HP E-PC S10 at home with FreeNAS 7 and it works perfectly. So I have decided to buy a HP T5525 and try the same. But I have stucked at the installing. Can someone help me with this, how can I install FreeNAS 7 on it?

Glad to see you've started a new thread. :D

Bit more info re problems needed.

t5000 is slightly misleading, it's a seperate line, but gets used for any t5***

Invaluable info about many 'Thin clients' available HERE

First off, I *think* you'll have a problem installing it to a t5525. Others may know different.

Assuming they are similar, I have a t5520 and the spec is marginal, and I could not install FreeNAS 7 because it throws up an error about the TEMP sensor.

Also the flash is too small and needs to be converted using a cf card/44pin adapter and ide lead, along with a suitable cf card, RAM is probably fixed and therefore not upgradable.

  • T5525 has:
    VIA Eden ESP 8000 (800MHz)
128 MB RAM (16 MB reserved for the video)
    256 MB flash drive

and as I could see the FreeNAS needs the following:

    Motherboard with x86 processor
    128 MB RAM
    32 MB free disk space

for the first sight it matches the minimum.
It has problems with the temp:

    READ(10). CDB: 28 0 0 1 d 12 0 0 1 0
    CAM Status: SCSI Status Error
    HARDWARE FAILURE asc:3e,2
    Timeout on logical unit
    Retrying Command (per Sense Data)
acpi_tz0: _TMP value is absurd, ignored (-247.7C)

    but after that it continues:

    Manual root filesystem specification:
    <fstype>:<device> Mount <device> using filesystem <fstype>
    eg. ufs:da0s1a
? List valid disk boot devices
    <empty line> Abort manual input

Can we solve that somehow? Or the only hope is to replace the Flash with a CF and install FreeNAS8? Or maybe after that we have replaced the Flash with a CF the temp problem will be solved?

That's the same error as I was getting with the 5520, (BTW same processor, but less ram and smaller flash). It's ages since I played with that 5520 + FreeNAS 7, but I think I used a 256MB flash in a t5000 (1GHz), no error in that situation, then altered the /etc/sysctl.conf using the solution at,

    http://forums.freebsd.org/archive/index.php/t-11882.html

and finally put the flash back in the 5520. It worked, but struggled.
One advantage of a non-Windows system is that it doesn't complain too much if hardware changes.:)

I can't see that a cf card will be of any advantage.

There could be a way to install under Windows, I've not tried it, but,

As to using FreeNAS 8, that's a completely different thing, 2GB just for the OS, and it's no longer the hobbyist choice. Comparison table below,

Forgot to mention that some have used the no apci from the initial boot options. Didn't work for me though.
