So graduate in absentia if you can't or won't pay it.

You don't have to go to if you can't afford it, just opt to graduate in absentia. It's more for the parents anyway.

If you think the gown hire is expensive, just wait until you see how much they want for official photography!

Drinks at the event (champagne tent), £150 for the official photos and frames. Hope your tickets to the ceremony are free (not always the case)
Travel back to university and overnight accommodation for the event.
    The list goes on.
Usually proud parents are delighted to pay these extra costs but it is an expensive day. Not for everyone

I think my graduation came to about £200 in total once Photos, Gowns and Tickets were taken into consideration. Luckily I live close by so there was no accommodation costs.

My parents paid for most of it because they wanted the photos, I just paid for the Gown and Tickets.

My graduation photo in mortar board and gown is still on display at my Nan's house. Can't even remember what it cost then. It is there to inspire the next generation of potential graduates (hopefully).

Stump up, you mean swine!! It's a fraction of the cost some folks spend on a wedding and at least the degree will last forever:D

thanks for the replies......I know it is only one day

however I have been in uni for 6 years so really am feeling the pinch.....married with a child and daughter and hubby lost his job in Jan so we are living off NHS bursary so 44 pounds is a hell of a lot and I don't have a mummy and daddy to pay this for me

I can just be absent but its not fair I dont think that I cannot just dress smartly to pick up my certificate than pay this amount for just a few hours.....anywhere else on this site I don't think ppl would call me mean(I know was tongue in cheek! )
for not wanting to pay this

I have looked on ebay and can buy a cheaper gown but not the hood bit as thats specific for my degree :-(
  • You sound like a medic from your description? Did you know you can defer your graduation ceremony. Perhaps go to the next one when you have some more money
Or you can perhaps approach your alumni dept and see if they have a fund for such events. Maybe even ask your university for a contribution from their hardship fund? They can only say no (or possibly yes)
Ask your events department or who ever organises the ceremony, what help is available, they will know and probably be able to help.
