About 2 months ago I sent off a complaint letter to hsbc regarding ppi on an old credit card, I didn't have the agreement nor statements to show I'd been charged ppi, I just remembered I was so took a chance.

They responded soon after saying I'd never taken out ppi so I left it a that.

However I've been having a clear out today and I did find quite a few old statements on this account and I can see each month I've been paying a £20 fee titled "insurance".

Would this be ppi? Or perhaps some sort of different type of insurance sold with a credit card?

if it were £20.00 exactly, it seems unlikely that it will be PPI. as the ppi premium is small percentage of your balance and £20 is a too precise figure.

I'm thinking it might have been something like cardguard?

yes probably is, its going to be something with a fixed monthly fee.
