Dial 9 scam

If in doubt, a free telephone call to ICTIS should allay any fears:
ICSTIS, FREEPOST, WC5468, London SE1 2BR
Online: https://www.icstis.org.uk
Telephone: 0800 500 212Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
colin_tomlinson wrote:What's the query? Of course pressing 9 will cost you. Think about how pressing 3 results in a cost on 1471. There's no charge until you press 3.
The difference is that you dial 1471, the 9 myth is someone calling you therefore an incoming call and AFAIK unless a transfer charge call you do not get charged for incoming callsDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

It can if it comes from 0800 REVERSE

Something along the lines of:

I choose not to receive 0800 Reverse services as defined in section 4 ‘Range Of Services’ and request that you block my number (01234 56X890) from receiving such calls.
Please acknowledge receipt hereof."Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Do callback services on landlines exist that can be triggered like this? It sounds possible, and if so then perhaps the charge can be applied to the BT bill. This is the bit that seems to be in question. I'm sceptical of the charge transfer for an undialled number. I have other callback service accounts, but here the account is administered and charged by the originating company0

That is actually a very good point. I had forgotten about that!
However, I suspect that in order to provide such a service, the service provider of the person receiving the call would have to enter into an agreement with the company providing a reverse charge service. So I do not think it an option open to the fraudsters.0 -
I was waffling a bit without having looked at the site. Any interest wanes when you see the call charges - £2.50 connect + 20p per minute from landlines. £3 + 33p/min callbox0

Why on earth would you want to cancel it? I see it as free calls from my kids to me from the station or town or wherever to make up for all those 10p's that I've lost over the years when their phone boxes haven't been working. My kids have just enough time (have to be quick) to leave a message like "Call Fred mobile" or "Cardiff Station" when it asks them for their name. You then get a call saying (not a real person) " you have a call from "call Fred mobile" if you want to accept the charge say yes. You say nothing and it says "we'll try something else, press 9 to accept the charge & press 7 to reject it". You press 7, it says "you have not been charge for this call". Mind you the amount of cash I've lost in phone boxes it'll take a long time to get that back.Torgwen.....................

Kids also have an annoying habit on playing tricks on (older?) people by making hoax calls using 0800reverse!0 -

0800 REVERSE
d. Accepting the Call
To accept the call the receiving party should say “Yes”. To decline the call they can simply hang up or say “No”. Additionally, for calls placed via the automated service, calls can be accepted by pressing “9” or pressing “7” to decline.
So if someone rings you using 0800 REVERSE you are in effect paying for the call if you press 9.Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.0
