Nikon Cameras

I am just about to buy a new camera and am very confused. I was going to get a Panasonic Lumix (£140 reduced to £70) but have just seen a Nikon in Argos (£280 reduced to £110) Nikon Coolpix S6150 16MP

My husband has said that Nikon are a really good buy. I am looking to spend about £100 and will basically be using it to take pictures of my children. I currently have a SOny, but it is really slow!

Thanks

I haven't used the Nikon myself but the review here is reasonably good, although a review on Amazon does criticise the battery life. My own digital compact is a Lumix, it's old but I like it and the Zeiss lenses on them are pretty good. Without knowing which of the many Lumix models you are considering it's impossible to offer a view on how it compares with the Nikon.

Also have a look at warehouse express they have a great customer service who can help you choose a camera for your needs, I personally have always bought Nikon because the build quality is very good. But Panasonic, Canon, Sony, Olympus all very good, but do not fall for the more Megapixel the better crap, it is more to do with the quality of the lens and the size of the sensor. 12+ megapixel is sufficient for most uses.
    ewwwww what is that...

Please don't let your decision be swayed by big price reductions.

Most compact digital camera prices drop like a stone after a year or so (hence the quoted reductions). Once you've found a camera that you like the feel of,and does everything you want, I'd look at a site like
    www.camerapricebuster.com
to find the best possible deal.

A previous poster is right about ignoring megapixel numbers. I agree. The quality of the lens is paramount. That said, I recently needed a small camera to carry around on a holiday and bought a Panasonic Lumix with a Leica lens (DMC - FS16) having read good write-ups and I'm not particularly impressed

That said, I normally use an SLR digital camera, so maybe I am expecting too much.....!

I know what you mean, I really love my Nikon D200 pictures look amazing compared to digital compacts camera.

But if you are going compact have a look at reviews. Remember to always go and play with them in the shop before you buy, be very aware of the feedback on your screen when you take the pictures because some are very slow and you can miss really good family pictures.

I have an old Nikon Coolpix 5200 as a pocket camera & the battery is re-chargeable. Its been great & perfectly acceptable for photos on my PC or for printing.
I was told that Nikon have the best lenses but I'm just a 'happy snapper'! so as long as I get a good shot (which I do) I'm happy - its got sport mode too.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Thanks for this post, I saw that the Nikon compact s9100 was getting plaudits/reviews as being great value for money, yr comment was great for getting a good price at under £150

Hi,I have the Nikon Coolpix S6150 16MP ,its a good camera,BUT,any pics I take are sharp in the centre of the pic,and very blurred around the outside of the centre of the image,I have tried everything, but nothing fixes it,so beware of this on this particular camera.
