Contacting Halifax

I rang Halifax today as i have a query with my bank account. Going through the automated options, they ask for my account number and sort code like normal. Then they asked for my 3 digit security code on the back of the card.

Is this normal? never had to give it before when ringing up

I would have said you'd be ok so long as you called the number which you know as belonging to the Halifax. Would say it's unusual though, I know with lloyds phone bank they just ask for the sort code, account number and a couple of digits from your security number so would have thought halifax would be the same.

They should not need that. only parts of any pre-arranged password, ID check etc..

Yea. The automated service asked if i had the card at hand to give the security number, i lied and said no and i got straight through to customer service who didnt ask for it.

I tried a different Halifax number and still got asked for it, so seems its genuine (even tho i cant see why)
  • You can set up a telephone security number so that you can use that rather than go through the procedure you have just described.

So you'd rather get charges for using your debit card abroad than using their clarity credit card with no foreign exchange fees?....

This is normal. Practise which Lloyds have always done. Halifax and Bank of scotland have both adopted this security measure.

You don't have to say yes.
