few cooker questions!

looking for freestanding cooker in new home and OH wants to use electric as opposed to gas due to safety.

1) i know gas is cheaper than electric cooker. does anyone know how much so i can try to convince her! and are gas ones really dangerous for example if a child turns one on by mistake!

2) regarding induction vs ceramic hobs. my understanding is that induciton cookers do not work with all types of pots while ceramic ones do. how fast do ceramic ones heat up?
3) anyone able to recommend any cookers. looking for 4 hobs with fan oven and grill...

thanks a lot and happy easter to all!

  • hi 123, i will try and answer some of your questions!

Gas is cheaper however not as efficent as an induction hob. Gas is about 4p per kwh and electric about 12p.

I have induction and it is fantastic, I was Gas before and will now never look back, induction can boil water wuicker than a kettle they also have child locks etc. Not all pans will work however £70 can get you a set of decent ones!

    Go induction - AMAZING!

How is this possible. You change a gas cooker to electric so you must use more electricity?
Lose is to not win......Loose is not tight......get it right!
  • plumface - i can only imagine the answer to be that whilst renewing the kitchen I changed the kitchen lights to LED, but on like for like meter KWH from last year I am down and so is the gas, (always had an electric oven but wasnt very effecient!) Efficency of induction is approx 84% .

Cleaning the hob is fine, i just use an antibacterial spray and a glass scraper, most induction hobs have a built in program to turn off when water overspills etc - they really are clever and the control you have over the temp is next to none!

Totally agree with Lifes too short.

Induction hobs are the best thing invented. They heat up faster, you have more control over them than a gas hob, as it only heats the pan up, not the cast iron pan trivet. Mine is an indiset one and it heats a pan of water faster than a kettle does.

Don't worry about your pans too much. As long as your pans can attract a magnet on them, they will work. I went to tesco and took a magnetic knife rack off the shelf to try the pans and roasting trays ( wanted a roasting tray which would work on the hob) , Had no probs finding one there.

Cleaning is so easy. I use Lidl's glass cleaner on it, quick wipe and it comes up like new. Your pans don't get grubby either. Had tefal pan set ( preference pans) for 2 years, still look like new.

They are much safer than ceramic/gas hobs, as they cool down quicker too.

Wouldn't have another gas cooker now if you paid me.

Hi, i have had all, gas, ceramic and now induction. Induction is the quickest, cleanest and easiest to clean. I would NEVER go back to gas and don't know why i was so upset our new home did not have gas. I promise you will never look back with induction. All my pans work on them, not sure what type of pan doesn't. As for spills, because the cooker does not heat, the pan does, the spillage does not bake on. This is the link to the one i bought which i highly recommend if your looking for value for money, but there are loads to choose from http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/r/logik%20induction%20hob/0_0_0/
not sure if you can get induction freestanding, but if not, i would highly recommend ceramic with fast heat up hallogen as well.

Agree with all of the above induction fans. Once you go over to induction, you will wonder why you never did before. Have an AEG and it is ace!.

you need to check what the existing electrical supply to your oven is. If you are changing from gas to electric it might not be enough and you'll need to get a new circuit installed.
