Stupid question...what type of light should I put on an entrance porch wall?

The light is going to be fitted in my entrance porch on the wall very near my front door. Do I need an outside light or an inside wall light? I know it sounds stupid so please be kind. Got an electrician coming out to fit it and I don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Not a stupid question at all.

If your porch is open to the elements then an outside light (rating IP65 or similar) will be needed, However if the porch is as watertight as the inside of the house then a domestic light fitting will do the job.

In any doubt go for the IP65 or similar. There are loads of these available in the likes of B and Q etc.

We have a porch and until last year I used to struggle with locking up if it was dark, once we switched off the kitchen light(we have two doors and an alarm that gives you about 90 secs to lock both) we have a security light that comes on once you get outside. I asked my DH to fit another security light inside the porch that stays on just long enough to lock the inner door, I can't believe how much easier it is with that new light and I can't understand why we didn't think of it before!

I bought one for £1.50 from Ikea, this for a water tight porch. It is quite flat and it has been fixed to the ceiling. If you do this just remember to leave enough space to open the door fully ;)
