company still trading but wont accept gift card

I was given a gift from Peacocks for Xmas which I returned and was given a gift card. The company went into liquidation shortly afterwards, but only for a few days, was bought out and is still trading as Peacocks. I am told they wont accept the gift card and I will get back less than 10p when the payouts are given, maybe not even that. It doesn't seem fair that they have my money, still trade with the same name, but I can't spend it on goods. Does anyone have experience of this situation

The shops are being run by the administrators and as such you are classed as just another unsecured creditor (same story at Game). That is the way of the world.

Peacocks is no longer trading. EWM now owns the name and the shops that are still open are a completely different company.

This MSE News item talks about Peacocks administration.

It was not in Liquidation but Administration and the company was in administration for just over a month, not a few days. The company has now been taken over by EWM since Feb 22nd and the gift cards and refund cards are no longer taken due it not being Peacocks Stores LTD any more and that is who you had the refund card from it is now called PStores LTD so it no longer counts unfortunately.
  • Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to reply to my post. I hope you can all get/see this. I wish the new owners would change the name on the front of the store then!! Also, bearing in mind we are unlikely to be owed a fortune, it would be a nice gesture if they let us spend out money in store. Not doing so certainly puts me off spending more in there, so not a good business move on their part I would say

Actually it is a good business move on their part - because otherwise they would be giving away goods!

But yes; it is galling. This has happened to

    Peacocks,
    La Senza,
    Game
    Woolworths

    and more...

The store are still always going to be "PEACOCKS" EWM has bought the name etc so, they are not going to change a name which has been on the high st since 1884 just to make you feel a bit better about your gift card.

You might now owe a fortune however when you take peoples individual gift cards and add them up it can be a fortune. It can be a huge liability for the new company to bear - larger than the Goodwill honouring them would create!

Once again, thanks all of you who posted a reply. Guess I'm not a business brain, just a soft touch who likes things to be fair - or at least seem fair...
