ford escort reservoir pump filter

hi all, i got a small problem, my screen washer where not working, so i cleaned out the holes, no problem, looked at the pipes still no water coming through, so after googling about how to get the water pump off the reservoir easily instead of the hard way, as in remove the wheel, then the wheel arch cover, just to get to 1 of the 3 bolts, i found a page on how to, so today i removed the pump, tested it, water went through easily enough so it must have been the filter, this is where my problem began, it wouldnt come out of the hole, so using a screwdriver i carefully pried trying not to damage it, and instead of it coming out it went into the reservoir.
Anyone got any ideas of how to get it out.
i've tried phoning a motor factors but they seem to be shut and halfords dont do the part i need. I can still use the car after all its only for cleaning the windscreen, I not using the car today but if th motorfactors are open tomorrow i will be using the car to get there to get the part if they can get it.

can you not hook it out through the hole where this grommet normally sits?(an old coat hanger made of steel would do)
if you do get it out be very careful reinstalling it and lube the inside so when you plop the motor into it it doesnt flip back inside

spent about 1hr trying to get the filter out, even got my sister whos got smaller hands to have a go, even with a hook its actually bigger than the hole, sister told me to just get another one.
I'm given up, the cars going to be scrapped this year any way, insurance is at the end of june, so waiting on my renewal quote and subsequent prices comparisons to decide what i'm going to do with it, as you are no longer aloud to keep a car with no insurance.

must be using the wrong kind of hook, did you jack up the car to do it ?
phoned hendy ford this morning, 97p for a new one, but i cant get it till tuesday. tried a screwdriver to move to the hole, a bent piece of metal and a piece of coaxial copper wire bent into 2, still cant get the damn thing out, probably using either 2 thick or 2 thin wire.
