Thank you - I still use the standard zoom that came with the deal I got. I've heard that it's one of their poorest lenses but just haven't been able to afford to get a new one yet - we're moving house next week so you can imagine, I'm sure. Is it 18-55mm? That sounds about right (sorry - it's not to hand for me to check). Yeah, I really did get that close to the spider (ewwww).:rotfl: Mind you I'm finally moving to a house with a garden in the sun so I'm going to be able to take many more of my favourite type of photos - close ups of plants & flowers, etc - so I'm very excited. :T So maybe I will treat myself to a new lens...

The only thing my camera is half decent for is macro shots.

I would love to be able to use it for my daughter and other stuff but you have to work so hard to get *respectable* shots you just feel like throwing the thing out of the window and grabbing some artists paints

i would go for the canon. i had one for xmas and haven't been able to put it down. it takes amazing photos. there are just so many gadgets and theres an automatic switch that you can use until you get used to it.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I am now edging towards the Canon 350 - and at £379.50 for an internet price, that seems like a pretty good deal to me. I am going to Jessops tomorrow though to get a feel for the cameras first.

went thru a similar choice at the back end of last year.

had borrowed a Nikon DSLR from a friend, and it was brilliant, the feel, the photos and the robustness of it all.

then borrowed a canon 300D. older model, but as i have large hands, the 350D was too small for me to be comfortable.

here are some pics I took with the ultimate choice ....

I ended up buying the 300D (second hand) and although I could've got a 350D or a 400D for a little bit more, it was not suitable.

Def suggest that you go to a shop and ask lots of questions ... and def get a 'feel' for the cameras as well.

Why didn't i chose the Nikon? No reason really, just that the Canon had a good feel to it.

And also, don't get too consumed with the number of megapixels that the camera has. Anything more than 5-6mp is lost unless you are looking at enlarging the pic above A3 size.

Better to get used to the camera and then use money to buy decent lenses .... :j

Hey I went into Jessops (unfortunately in a bit of a hurry) the other day and I could swear there was a D50 with 18-55 AND 55-200 for exactly the same price.... I really am considering an upgrade (even tho I can't afford it!) but seriously don't know which way to go - I like features unique to both camera's  Think I need to get down there now and have a chat

You know I am really tempted that is a great deal, I just hate the layout and the build quality of the Canon! Saying that the D40 doesn't look much better and while I love the ergonomics of the D50, it is perhaps a little too limited for something that is more expensive than the 350 :wall:
I am going back to Jessops tomorrow but it seems they don't do the D50 anymore :( I really missed the boat there!
Why does the d50 generally go for more?
