British Gas Meter-Debt

Hi,

We moved into our flat in June 2005. The gas is on a pre pay card with British gas.

Since we started putting money onto it we noticed that it was taking money for "debt". We usually put £8 on £5 of this would go on the emergency and we thought £3 would be able to be used straight away. But the meter was taking up to 50p each time for this "debt".

We thought it was because the boiler had been lighting when there was no gas on the meter...but recently we've started turning the boiler off completely and it still makes us pay for debt.

We are now assuming that this debt belongs to the previous tenant, unfortunately we've been paying it off for the last 21 months.

We contacted British Gas and received an email asking for further details, i've sent them three times now with no reply. We've phoned British Gas before and been in a queue for about an hour...not much use.

Does anyone know if i can claim this debt back?

When you moved in, did you get a new card or use the old occupiers?

If you used the old people's card, unless you have kept the receipts you will find it very hard to get the money back.

However if you did register and use your own card, your account should be in credit and you would be due a nice rebate!
