Advice needed with unfair default from Dell

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum
At the moment I'm changing bank accounts and a direct debit from Dell wasn't taken from my old account due to lack of funds on 19/3/2012, to my stupidity I missed that it wasn't taken and yesterday 4/4 received a default notice by email. In the email it said they had sent me several letters which I didn't receive. I paid what was owing straight away thinking the letters must have been lost in the post. Today 5/4 I received 2 different letters from dell telling me about the failed attempt to take money and what would happen if I didn't pay eg default. I thought they must have been in the post over a week but checking the post date on both of them I realised they were sent on the 2/4. Is this a fair way to deal with me and what can I do if it is isn't.
Many Thanks

You haven't got a "default", in the true sense of the word. To get a default on your credit file would require you to miss 6 or more payments in succession.
What you'll have on your credit file is a late payment marker...a number '1', hopefully prefixed by many '0' markers.
Lenders of this type generally use the word "default" in order to panic you into dealing with the matter ASAP...and in this case it's worked!
In the case outlined, it's completely fair to mark your credit file with a '1' (if indeed they do that...so check in a month or so by ordering your credit report from Experian et al). Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.0 -
OP ..You chose to change banks. Sometimes there is insufficent time for a D/D to be transferred in time from one bank to another.
YorkshireBoy 's post is 100% correct.0
