Will I be charged?

Basically I'm currently a student with an RBS "Route 21" account. I have a Direct Debit set up every month with Orange.
This month my phone bill was slightly higher than expected- and my account balance went into minus figures, and I got a letter from Orange saying they were unable to take the payment. I transferred some money from another account the same day in order to bring my account up to a good figure.
I have two questions: firstly, if Orange didn't take out the payment, then why did my account go into minus figures? Also, is the bank likely to charge me, even though I put money back into my account within hours?

If a letter has been received from Orange then this didn't happen in the last couple of days. Has the money actually gone from your account or not? Was the DD actually paid or was it recredited to your account as unpaid? I'm not asking what the letter from Orange said; I'm asking what your bank account statement shows.
If it was paid and you paid in money to cover it the same day, you may or may not be charged. You don't say if you have an authorised overdraft or not etc
If it was unpaid, you will almost certainly be charged by your bank (and possibly Orange as well). Also, if the DD was unpaid, have you now paid Orange by an alternative method. If you haven't then do so ASAP.0 -
Speak to RBS to check
Sounds like the request came in, hence the negative, they then decided to decline the payment rather than allow you an unauthorised overdraft so didnt send the money hence the letter from Orange but you should be seeing another positive transaction into your account for the same amount on the same day. If this is the case you will normally be charged a failed payment fee0 -
Natpest will likely sting you with a bounced direct debit charge and your internal rating will shoot down a few notches."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0

To avoid problems in the future, it might be worth making a diary note to check how much that month's bill is going to be each month.0
