Hiya
Waitrose do a pirate ship, you have to give seven days notice, and I think it's about £30.
Have you thought about making a raft? Could just be a traybake chocolate cake with chocolate butter icing and flakes on the top to look like wood. You could then decorate it with pirates, flags, etc.
I got someone to make an amazing cake for me last year, a pirate ship, but hard braking caused the sides to break and the flag to topple over ... farewell to my £30. This year I'm going for the raft option. I was a bit worried about feeding young children blue icing so I'm going to put my raft on a big plank of wood, covered with tin foil, and then I'll decorate the tin foil with blue icing waves ...
I am no Nigella but I reckon this one should be fairly straightforward.
Or: how about a load of mini cupcakes decorated with gold coins?? That's what i'm putting in the party bags ... You could even make a treasure chest out of a box, and fill it with the cupcakes. That's my back up plan for if the raft goes horribly wrong. What a shame, I'll have to eat it myself if it does. That's Numberwang!0 -

Easiest Pirate type cake is a Treasure Chest!
I made one for DS (some years ago!) but if you could buy a biggish square/rectangular Chocolate cake, all you need to do is slice the top off & fill with brightly coloured sweets, jellies, coins etc. Overfill so they're all hanging out & it looks brill! Some of those sweet necklaces too help it hang together!
Stick the sweets on with dabs of icing or buttercream if you need to!

There's a pirate cake tin on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wilton-Little-Pirate-Cake-Tin-Cake-Decorating_W0QQitemZ180075305076QQihZ008QQcategoryZ57211QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
Also a couple of cake toppers (they're in America but shipping might not be too much)

I cheated a few years ago when my son had a pirate party. I brought a plain, iced cake and stuck a toy pirate ship and pirates on it.
Some shops do photo cakes now so an alternative choice would be to get your son to dress up in a pirate costume, take a photo, and then get that put on the cake.0 -
Surely, you don't buy a pirate cake, you plunder it along with pieces of eight and other treasure "Me Hearties":rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0
