Price wars

We booked our cruise nice and early as we are told, after researching the best price, only to find out a month or so later that the price had been reduced by other companies and also the company we booked with, not by a mere few pounds I'm talking about £500.When I spoke to our agency they said there was nothing they could do and if we cancelled we would lose our deposit and be charged a fee on top totalling £800 approx.Itseems so unfair and has really put a damper on our trip.Has anybody else had this problem?or any advice

Once you are happy with the quoted price book the holiday. Once booked don't keep checking the price as you will disappointed if it has dropped.

Prices change, often daily, some you win, some you lose.

If the price of your holiday had went up by £500 would you have returned to the travel agent and offered to pay the extra?

The problem is Travel is quite a volatile market and lots of factors can affect the price, unless you tell us exactly what you've booked its hard for us to give you the correct advice.
For example the trouble with the 2 Costa ships if you've booked a costa cruise you would expect the prices to have dropped for them.
Your itinerary if you'd booked a cruise to egypt when all the trouble was on last year you'd expect the prices to drop for them.
I booked early for a trip to the Dominican Republic a couple of years ago, we got a really good price, but 2 months before we went the problems in Haiti happened so the prices dropped for the Dom rep because of this, often they're circumstances that cant be helped.

Best advice: forget about it and do not let it ruin your holiday.

You shopped around; checked prices; paid a fair price for the holiday you wanted. Now the operator finds that there are some places empty and is offering the left-overs at rock-bottom prices, so that even though they will lose money at that price they will lose less than they would if the places were left empty. So some poor family who thought they could not afford a holiday and did not book may now be getting a nice surprise. But they will have missed out on choosing the holiday and being able to look forward to it for months, the way that you have. If anything, be pleased at the good fortune of these people rather than allowing it to make you unhappy.
