Washing Machine Repairs?

Options
We rent privately, unfurnished but with white goods. Our washing machine has just broken for the second time in 7 months. First time was a blocked filter (we'd just moved in, nothing we'd put through the wash). Last night, machine made a noise then tripped the electrics.

Contacted the landlord, who said don't do anything with it (wasn't planning on, I know water and electrics don't mix!), he was on holiday but would be round on Sunday. Sunday isn't really convenient as we are going to be away, so asked him if we could get a repair man out to have a look, as we really need a washing machine (2 lots of work uniforms to wash every day) - he said no. Asked if we could take the machine out and use our own one (currently in storage from our last place) - again, no. He also said if we couldn't be there on Sunday it would be another fortnight before he'd be able to take a look at it!! So now we are having to cut our easter break short.

Where do we stand with this? I've had a look on the forums and previous issues seem to be with tennants wanting landlords to fix/replace machines at the landlords expense - but ideally, we'd like to put our own machine in, but he won't let us!

I'm also wary of him trying carrying out a DIY repair job on the machine when it's tripping the electric.

Whatever the landlord says, you're free to use your machine during the duration of the tenancy, but must reinstate the LL's machine correctly upon leaving.
