phobic flyer - trial flight

Hello all, I have developed over the years a fear of flying and the last two years we have stayed in the UK. This year I am determined to get back on a plane for a holiday with the family in Portugal - but already before I have booked anything I am nervous. I thought I should do a short flight with my husband  - dublin or Amsterdam with a stay over in May or June as a trial run. Obviously I want to do this as cheaply as possible and I am hoping you could help me out.

Dates in May or June not bothered when Newcastle or Teeside departure and a stay over in a 3star hotel.

Can you help me?

Also any tips on conquering my fears are much appreciated!

Have a look at the Barcelona Loopyhole thread, you should get a cheap hotel through there?

Have you considered a fear of flying course? I think Virgin run one?

Edit: This is the Virgin course ...

Virgin run this course out of Newcastle. I've heard amazing things about the course, immensily successful.

  • O also developed a fear of flying after many years of going abroad. It all started after I became a flight specialist for a travel agent and I listened to so many horroe stories that it put me off!! I even turned down free holidays!! But after 4 years I decided it was stupid and had to bite the bullet and book a holiday. I couldnt sleep for about 3 months before I was due to fly, so I resorted to taking a trip down to the doctors who prescribed me a tablet to take before the flight-it worked wonders. I did this for my next two flights but can now fly without them, so if your nerves are that bad maybe it would be worth a try x

My Mum had a fear of flying for many years .She got a Paul Mckenna tape which she played on her walkman whilst on board. She used it a few times and has been absolutely fine. They are currrently in Fuertaventura (4 hour flight) and she is not phased by flying anymore.

    Have a look at this:

It's VERY American but also very helpful. I downloaded the mp3 course a year or so ago before flying to Australia and it helped.

Incidentally I don't think the length of the flight has any bearing on nervousness (as far as I am concerned). At one point I seemed to be more nervous on a short flight to Spain than I was later on 21 hours worth to Melbourne. Perhaps it's difficult to sustain the nervousness over a long period!
