    My bank (lloyds) quoted me £30 to do a cash transfer via chaps only an hour ago.

    Why should the bank "lose" my money?
    Anyway, just to update - all sorted, thanks to the people who suggested "fast transfer", it took two hours as promised and did not cost anything. Both buyer and seller very happy.
