A campaign to tackle the growing problem of unemployment among the under 25s has been launched by the Brighton & Hove City Employment and Skills Plan (CESP) and BrightonandHoveJobs.

The campaign focuses on encouraging Brighton and Hove’s employers to support young unemployed people by giving them an insight into their industries. An online survey has been launched (28/03/2012) to gather information on local employers’ current and future plans to offer work experience opportunities, apprenticeships and internships. Employers will also be asked to consider giving talks in schools and colleges about the skills and qualifications required for their industry.In the last six months the unemployment rate for 18-24 year olds in the city has risen from 4.2% (1505) in June 2011, to 5.3% (1895) in February 2012, accounting for 27% of the total Job Seekers Allowance claimers in the city (6959).

The results will show to what extent local employers are planning to offer these opportunities as well as highlighting any perceived barriers that would prevent them from doing so. The figures will be collated anonymously, although those employers who are willing to offer these opportunities will be invited to an event where they can find out more.

Gary Peters, BrightonandHoveJobs Founder, said: “This campaign is all about giving youngsters a lifeline before they lose all confidence in themselves and their ability to find a job. I know times are tough for businesses and many employers are not in a position to take on more employees. But if you can offer a work placement or an apprenticeship, you are giving someone a big boost and significantly improving their chance to find work and make a worthwhile contribution to society.”

The initiative is welcomed by Phil Frier, Principal of City College Brighton & Hove and the chair of The City Employment and Skills Plan. He said: “I am pleased to say that there is a tremendous appetite in Brighton and Hove to respond to the needs of our unemployed youngsters. The way in which employers across the city have responded to offering apprenticeships, work experience and ultimately, jobs has already made a big impact. But there are still too many people under 25 without jobs or training opportunities. The City Employment Skills Group is working hard to find ways of linking employers with the untapped young talent in the city.”
