Pet harness sizing issue - Not as described

I purchased a pet harness from pets at home
http://www.petsathome.com/shop/black-nylon-dog-harness-by-pets-at-home-14253
Although it doesn't state on the site, the tags have descriptions of what size dog it would suit. I selected the one which was large, stating "Dalmatian, Boxer, Retriever & Spaniel"
My dog is an Alsatian Labrador. When she stands on her back legs she is eye height (i' 5ft 6").
I placed this on her and it lasted all of 5 meters (oh yes) before it slipped off (people at the bus stop thought it was rather funny)
I put her on her normal lead then after our trip to the field added the harness back on her as tight as it would go.
Still far to loose. The part which goes over the chest has enough room for my leg!
Now, I based the choice of size on the information the label gave. She is bigger, not smaller than the dogs specified.
If I take it back, could i reasonably argue that it's either not as described or possibly been labelled incorrectly?
Just want a second opinion before I go in store.

I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

As a starting point, why not go back and say "I'm sorry but this is too big for my dog. Can I possibly exchange it for a smaller one?"0

I have a feeling it's not quite the same as general products. I would assume something like is would be a "hygiene" issue. As it's been on the dog I suspect it's like taking a hair brush back, and they would say due to the possibility of flee's/doggy germs it's a none returnable item. Although that's just what I'm guessing.I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0

Does the label have any other information like actual measurements? If it doesn't I think you should be OK to exchange if the supplied information isn't accurate. If there are actual measurements I doubt you will be able to return as you could have measured the dog before using.0

Did you measure your dog first? The website clearly shows the measurements for each size.
I don't have this exact harness but every one I've ever bought also has the dimensions on the packaging.
Are you sure you put it on correctly? I can't imagine how a harness can be loose enough to slip off after a few metres without noticing it was loose when it was first put on
I've used large sized harnesses and they comfortably fit a medium shar pei cross on it's smallest sizing and a large ridgeback on almost the largest it can go. As I foster dogs I keep a small stash of a range of sizes but most are large as I tend to foster bigger dogs and none have ever been as off size as yours.
Another thing could be an extra large had been put in the packaging of large either by mistake or customers browsing if you bought it in store.
As long as it's not dirty and obviously well worn PAH are usually pretty good about taking these things back for an exchange. Whenever I buy a harness or muzzle I always check that I can return it if it's the wrong fit, they do understand that although you may measure first dogs are different shapes and what fit's one may not fit another despite the measurements being right.0 -

Wrong Guess. They allow you to also take your dog instore and try it out there and then.
PAH allowed me to take back a coat THREE times for one of our dogs as the different styles had different cuts and despite breed recommendations there is still a varience in each dog.
For example, our two, brother and sister, one boy one girl, the boy is a medium and the girl is a small.
They are no issue at all when you want to exchange, if you have the packaging at least...0 -
Fosterdog, the website has measurements but I didn't look online first. I was in the store and spotted it and the lighbulb above my head came on lol
Right, thanks for your help. I haven't shopped at PAH very much so clearly my guess was wrong.
Shall pop it back in and explained, hopefully they can compare against another Large and if it is the correct size on the correct tag I can then choose a medium.I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0
