Buying brand new - dealer telling porkies?

I've been Money Tipped!
I was mystery shopping new cars today, so not buying, just pretending to. :D

One of the dealers saw I wanted best price and was "looking to sign today". As I was so upfront with him, he "said" he would be frank and told me the manager was likely to offer me the car at cost price as it was the beginnning of the month.

Theory was at the beginning of the month, dealerships do anything they can to secure every sale as once they reach the manufacturer set target, they get access to better discounts and so make more profit on every car they sell over and above the target.

I asked about perceived wisdom that buying at the end of the month was better and he told me that you could get a deal if the target has not been hit, but mostly the targets are realistic and have already been reached a week before month end, so they don't need your sale as much, so wont fight as hard for it with discounts.

Just wondered if he was exaggerating to get the sale now or if there was some truth in it...

Nope but they do get bonuses for registering the cars from the head offices and I am pretty sure this is the new season for 2012 reg cars for which they get bonuses.

It's all lie dont trust the slicky !!!!!!!s. I trusted and ended up with a dead horse from BMW.

It’s made perfectly clear to any dealership I have something to do with that they will the the car for ‘x’ price when I want to buy it. If they make £100 on a transaction, so be it. I’ve also politely reminded a garage that they’ll make money from servicing and in commission from FordInsure (yes, I know, but I get about 40% off the car and a decent trade-in, so need to tow the line somewhere.)

It’s not essential for me to change the car as often as I do, however one dealership have had me back several times now, and are starting to find it hard to say no. I’d hate to think what I’ve given them in bonuses!

Salesmen within the motor trade will tell you anything you need to hear to get you to sign... been caught out myself!
  • Better deals are normally done at the end of the month, when the dealer is trying to meet or exceed his monthly quota, not at the beginning of the month.

As Adam above says, dealers will tell you anything you need to hear to get you to sign.

Wouldn't trust any of them, they just want a sale, including their grandmother if necessary.
